I received my Edward Bransfield scarf!! I watched and listened to Gael’s trip to Antarctica. The story is just amazing. And the scarf reflects the story. It is so soft and toasty warm! I LOVE the colors!!! Thank you, Gael!
Welcome to Penguin Designs.
Welcome to the Penguin Designs website home to tartans honoring Irish Antarctic Explorers
I created the original tartan pattern to honor the Irish Explorer Edward Bransfield who was the first to see, map, and chart the Continent of Antarctica. It is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans as the EDWARD BRANSFIELD COMMEMORATIVE TARTAN.
We are offering this beautiful tartan in scarves. There are three versions.
The first is handwoven by mw. It is made of traditional tartan wool. That is a fine wool that allows a tight weave. The tight weave is traditional and makes the fabric water and wind resistant. That tradition makes this scarf a winner in cold, windy climates.
The second is also handwoven. It is made of fine cotton for those who live in warmer climates or who might be allergic to wool. With the same tight weave, the cotton is wind resistant.
The third version is made of Irish Lambs wool. This scarf is commercially woven at Cushendale Woolen Mills in Graignamanagh, County Kilkenny, Ireland. It was an honor to collaborate with one of the best craftspeople in Ireland. The collaboration brought together the traditions of Irish exploration and Irish craftsmanship. The lambs wool is hank dyed at the mill. The colors are bright and the scarf is soft, warm and comfortable.
Take some time to explore our site. Enjoy the stories of the journeys that led to the creation of the tartan.
Stay tuned. You may learn a little about handweaving and a little bit about the Irish contribution to exploration.
